How to Embrace Unexpected Changes

Some moments in life will stop you dead in your tracks. A job loss or illness can derail your goals and your future. The unexpected is scary and sometimes out of our control, but there is one thing we do have power over, and that is our response to difficult times. Unexpected financial changes, while jarring, can be an opportunity to strengthen your resolve and can force you to lay down the path to a better future.

Have a plan and be prepared for the unknown. This requires that you develop and continuously cultivate courage, curiosity, optimism, gratitude, and creativity. All of this habits-of-mind will provide you with the flexibility and strength you need when faced with unexpected circumstances.

There are ways to be prepared, like having an emergency fund, knowing where all your financial accounts are housed, and having access to them at all times. Give yourself time to respond. So something unexpected happened, now what? Focus on the big picture and reassess your goals and plan. What are my options moving forward? Learn from the experience and look back and evaluate. What could you have done better next time? There are ways to be prepared for the unexpected, both mentally and emotionally. Prepare now and so you can focus on what matters when the unexpected occurs.
