I am turning 40 this month… it’s a very exciting milestone with lots to think about.

Because of this I wanted to talk to you about new year’s resolutions. I find that setting them somewhat loses its power over us by the time end of January rolls around.

So this year, I decided to try something different, yet still very intentional — picking an area or topic and summarizing it in one word, to help me stay focused throughout the year and ongoing.

My word is “wellness.” With this being such a big word and also a very broad topic I wanted to summarize for you the definition and what it can look like in all threads of our lives.

“Sandwich Generation,” you’ve heard this phrase before. In fact you might even be in it with your own family. I am certainly feeling like I am in the middle of that sandwich currently with my own.

The big question is how do we balance our own life, creating a family, raising our kids while also making sure that we can take care of our parents when they need us.

My guests today are Mike and Kim Barnes. Over the last five years, Mike and Kim found themselves navigating problems they never saw coming with their parents.

From Alzheimer’s, pacemakers, and COVID to tough decisions to move parents into their retirement communities, they were dealing with a lot. It was through this journey they’ve learned to balance the many facets of parenting aging parents, including medical, financial and everyday life decisions with the parenting of their college aged kids and building their careers.

Whether you are here now and will be in the future there is a lot to be learned from this conversation, so please join us and let’s walk this path together.

No matter what stage you are in in your life, it’s important to learn the basics of making smart financial decisions. Life can go by so fast so thinking about how to secure a financial future begins now. Think about the basics – how much money is coming in every two weeks in your checking account…every week…every month. How much money we *think* we make can look very differently when you sit and look at monthly expenses. Taxes, health insurance, mortgage, disability, life insurance to name a few. Understanding where your income is going is essential, plus if your income is not fixed or it’s inconsistent, you really need to have that baseline understanding.

What information do you need as parents to raise confident, emotionally healthy, and resilient children? What is emotional intelligence and why is it important for parents to teach this to their children?

In this episode, “Emotional Intelligence for Children,” Anna Sergunina chats with Dr. Steven Hall, author of 3 books and a board-certified family practitioner with a mission since 1985 to help people heal. He’s created an online course just for parents who want to teach their children the skills they need to handle adversity with strength and integrity and to be in touch with how they are really feeling. He talks about specific stages in a child’s life and why each stage requires a different approach to discussing feelings. How does emotional intelligence relate to finances?
